FAQs

Frequently Asked Questions :

Who can be a party wall surveyor?

The short answer is anyone.  The Party Wall etc. Act 1996 does not require a party wall surveyor to hold any qualification - academic, technical or professional.

What  party wall surveyors do need is to fully understand the legislation they are dealing with.

Do I need to have a construction industry background?

No.  Whilst some building knowledge can be helpful, we have trained delegates with no construction experience whatsoever and they are now successful (and busy!) party wall practitioners.

Why should I take your party wall surveyor training course?

You will not find an alternative course that covers the interpretation and application of the Party Wall etc. Act in such depth nor provides the additional benefits listed below.

    • the quality of course content and the rigorousness of the assessment procedure.
    • To ensure a high level of interaction with the trainer and to maintain delegate engagement throughout, we limit attendance on the course to a maximum of six people.
    • If you would like to know what others think of our course:

      • We can put you in touch with past delegates who will give you a frank and honest opinion
      • Copies of feedback sheets from previous courses are available on demand.

Can I be a party wall surveyor after taking this course?

Yes. We will furnish you with all the knowledge needed to interpret the Act in accordance with current best practice and to avoid potential pitfalls. Becoming competent in its application is readily achievable by anyone with the right approach and a desire to learn. Everything is taught in plain jargon-free English and where case law is relevant, we reduce it to a set of common sense principles that are not difficult to follow.

Every matter a party wall surveyor deals with is different from the last and there are no ‘one size fits all’ solutions. Each must be settled in accordance with the relevant rights, restrictions and remedies laid down by the Act. Therein lies the fascination.

How long is the course?

It is two full days – and very intensive.  We start at 9:00 a.m. sharp and don’t expect to finish until 5.30 p.m. You must attend both days in order to be eligible to take the post-course assessment

How much does it cost?

£730.00 (VAT not applicable).

How much can I charge as a party wall surveyor?

It varies significantly from surveyor to surveyor and is location dependent. Fees are controlled only in so far as the Party Wall etc. Act requires that they be reasonable. There are no guidelines. You need to gauge the market by making enquiries in your area to see what others are charging. Typically, fees are upwards of £100.00 + VAT per hour outside London, in the region of £200.00 + VAT per hour in Greater London and can be £300.00 + VAT or more per hour in Central London, depending on the experience of the surveyor and the perceived value of that experience. These rates reflect the specialist knowledge that party wall surveyors possess. Some surveyors charge fixed fees.

What if I have a party wall issue I am not sure about after I have taken the course?

We are here to support you. E-mail or call us with details of the problem and we will offer specific guidance as to how the Act applies to your particular circumstance. We aim to respond within 24 hours.
